Serengeti lodge safari with wildlife and safari vehicle

3-Day Group Lodge Safari

Arusha → Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha, Tanzania

This is the more comfortable version of the 3-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari. Travelers still share the safari vehicle, but instead of sleeping at public campsites, they stay in comfortable lodges or tented camps. The route is short, so the itinerary gives most of the available time to Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

Why Choose a Group Lodge Safari

Lodges in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro area offer a different experience than camping. You get a proper bed, hot water, and a roof over your head. The meals are prepared by chefs, not cooked over a fire. And you still get the wildlife — the lodges are located inside the parks, so you're surrounded by the bush.

This is a group safari. You share the vehicle with other travelers, which keeps the cost down. The group size is capped at seven guests, so the vehicle never feels crowded. Your guide handles all the logistics, and you focus on the wildlife.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Depart Arusha after breakfast and drive toward Serengeti through the Ngorongoro highlands. After entering Serengeti, continue with an afternoon game drive. This first drive gives you the opportunity to see the landscape change from highland forest and farmland into the open grasslands of Serengeti. Overnight: Central Serengeti lodge. Meals: Lunch & dinner.
Have breakfast and enjoy a morning game drive in Serengeti. This is a good time to search for predators because lions and other carnivores can be active during the cooler morning hours. After the game drive, leave Serengeti and drive toward Ngorongoro. Overnight: Ngorongoro/Karatu area lodge. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner.
After an early breakfast, descend into the crater. The crater floor has a very high concentration of wildlife. Look for lions, buffaloes, elephants, hippos, hyenas, zebras and wildebeest. The area around the crater lakes can be particularly productive for birdlife and hippos. After the game drive, ascend the crater and begin the drive back to Arusha.
Best Time to Visit for Lodge Safari

Lodge safaris run year-round. The lodges are open in every season, and the wildlife doesn't migrate out of the parks.

  • June to October: Dry season. The skies are clear, the roads are dry, and wildlife gathers around water sources. This is peak season, so book early.
  • November to May: Green season. The landscape is green and lush. Fewer tourists, lower lodge rates. The roads can get muddy, but the wildlife is still abundant.
  • January to February: Calving season. The wildebeest give birth in the southern Serengeti. Predators are active and visible.
