3-Day Manyara & Ngorongoro Safari

Arusha → Lake Manyara → Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha

A quick loop through two completely different parks. Lake Manyara is narrow and green, pressed against the Rift Valley escarpment. Ngorongoro is a collapsed volcano the size of Manhattan. The wildlife is different in each place, and the landscape couldn't be more distinct. This is a private safari the truck is yours, the guide is yours, and you move at your own pace.

What makes this loop different

Lake Manyara gets overlooked. People rush past it on the way to the Serengeti. But the park has something the Serengeti doesn't tree-climbing lions. They rest in the branches of acacia trees during the heat of the day. It's a behavior you don't see often. The lake itself is alkaline, which draws thousands of flamingos. The park is narrow, running along the base of the escarpment. The views are dramatic.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the opposite. It's a collapsed volcano, 260 square kilometers of grassland, swamps, and lakes on the floor. The crater walls rise 600 meters around you. The wildlife is concentrated and easy to find. You'll see lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, zebras, wildebeest, and the endangered black rhino. It's a natural amphitheater, and the animals have nowhere to hide.

Hussein picks you up from your hotel in Arusha around 8 in the morning. The drive to Lake Manyara takes about two hours, most of it on paved road. You'll pass through small towns and see the Rift Valley escarpment rising in the distance before you even reach the park gate.

By mid-morning you're inside the park. The road runs narrow along the base of the escarpment, with the lake on one side and the cliffs on the other. The game drive starts almost immediately. You'll see elephants in the forest, giraffes on the plains, and if you're lucky, the tree-climbing lions resting in the acacia branches. They don't always climb, but the guides know the spots where they usually are.

The afternoon light on the lake is something else. The flamingos turn the shoreline pink. You stop for lunch at a picnic site overlooking the water.

You check into your lodge on the crater rim. The view from here is the first thing you notice the crater floor spreads out below you, 600 meters down. You can see the green of the grasslands and the glint of water from the lakes. The evening is yours. You sit on the terrace with a drink and watch the sun drop behind the crater wall.

You're up before sunrise. The lodge packs a breakfast box because you want to be at the descent road by 6:30, right when they open the gate. The road into the crater is steep and winding, and the mist sits low over the floor as you come down.

The crater is 260 square kilometers. You have the whole morning to cover it. The wildlife is everywhere it's the highest density of large mammals in Africa. You'll see lions on the open plains, elephants in the forest, hippos in the lakes, and rhinos in the grasslands. The guides know the crater floor like the back of their hand. You're stopping every few minutes for something new.

Picnic lunch happens near the Hippo Pool. You eat with the windows down, listening to the grunts and splashes. After a full morning, you start the climb back up. The drive to Arusha takes about three hours. Drop-off is at your hotel or the airport.

Best time to visit Manyara & Ngorongoro

Both parks are open year-round. The wildlife doesn't migrate it stays in the parks. What changes is the landscape and the crowds.

  • June to October. Dry season. The roads are dry, the skies are clear, and wildlife gathers around water sources. This is peak season expect more vehicles in the crater.
  • November to May. Green season. The landscape is lush and green. Fewer tourists, lower rates. The roads can get muddy but remain passable.
  • January to February. Calving season in the Serengeti, but Manyara and Ngorongoro are also good for predator sightings during this time.
