Tarangire elephants

Ramadhani picks you up from your hotel in Arusha around 8 in the morning. The drive to Tarangire takes about two hours. You leave the city behind and pass through Maasai villages and farmland before the park gate appears.

Tarangire is known for elephants. Not just a few herds of them. They gather around the Tarangire River, which is the only permanent water source in the area during the dry season. The park also has baobab trees, some of them hundreds of years old, standing like giant sentinels across the landscape.

You drive through the park for the rest of the day. By late afternoon you check into your lodge near the park boundary. The sunset hits the baobabs and the elephants move toward the river.

Best time to visit Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro

All three parks are open year-round. The wildlife moves with the seasons. What changes is the landscape, the crowds, and the rates.

  • June to October. Dry season. The roads are dry, the skies are clear, and wildlife gathers around water sources. Peak season.
  • November to May. Green season. The landscape is lush and green. Fewer tourists, lower rates. The roads can get muddy but remain passable.
  • January to February. Calving season. The wildebeest give birth in the southern Serengeti. Predators follow the herds.
