The Big Five is the holy grail of African safaris. Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. Tarangire delivers elephants in large herds. The Serengeti delivers lions, leopards, and buffalo. Ngorongoro delivers the rhino — the crater is one of the best places in Africa to see the endangered black rhino.
The lodges on this route are midrange — comfortable, well-located, and good value. Sangaiwe Tented Lodge in Tarangire, Serengeti Tortilis Camp in the Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Tortilis Camp on the crater rim. This is a private safari, so the vehicle and guide are yours.
Hussein picks you up from your Arusha hotel around 8 AM. The drive to Tarangire takes about two hours. You leave the city behind and pass through Maasai villages and farmland before the park gate appears.
Tarangire is known for elephants. Not just a few — herds of them. They gather around the Tarangire River, which is the only permanent water source in the area during the dry season. The park also has baobab trees, some of them hundreds of years old, standing like giant sentinels across the landscape.
You drive through the park for the rest of the day, stopping for wildlife and photos. By late afternoon, you check into Sangaiwe Tented Lodge. The sunset hits the baobabs and the elephants move toward the river.
Breakfast is early. You drive out of Tarangire and head toward the Serengeti. The route goes through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You stop at Olduvai Gorge, one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world. The museum is small but worth the stop.
You enter the Serengeti through Naabi Hill Gate. The landscape opens up. You can see for miles. The plains stretch out in every direction. The wildlife starts showing up almost immediately — zebras, wildebeest, gazelles. And where there are herds, there are predators.
You spend the afternoon on the plains, driving toward Serengeti Tortilis Camp. By the time you check in, the sun is low and the colors shift from gold to orange.
You have the whole day in the Serengeti. The park is 14,750 square kilometers. It's bigger than some countries. Your guide knows where the predators are resting and where the herds are moving.
You do an early morning game drive, when the light is soft and the predators are still active. Then you stop for breakfast out in the bush, a thermos of coffee and a packed box. The afternoon is slower — you find a spot near a waterhole and watch the animals come and go.
The migration moves constantly. Your guide adjusts the route based on where the herds are. You might see wildebeest in the tens of thousands. Or you might find a pride of lions resting under a tree. You never know what the day brings, and that's the point.
One last morning game drive in the Serengeti. The light is different in the morning — everything is golden and soft. You see the animals one more time before heading out.
You drive back through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and check into Ngorongoro Tortilis Camp on the crater rim. The view hits you the moment you step out of the vehicle. The crater floor is 600 meters below, a massive bowl of grassland and lakes.
The evening is quiet. You sit on the terrace with a drink and watch the sun go down. The crater walls catch the last light.
You're up before sunrise. The lodge packs breakfast boxes and you're at the descent road by 6:30, right when they open the gate. The road is steep and the mist is still sitting on the crater floor.
You have the whole morning in the crater. It's 260 square kilometers of grassland, swamps, and lakes. The wildlife is concentrated here. You'll see lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, zebras, and wildebeest. The rhinos are there too — Ngorongoro is one of the best places in Africa to see the endangered black rhino.
You picnic lunch near the Hippo Pool, windows down, listening to the sounds. After a full morning, you climb back up and drive to Arusha. Three hours later, you're at your hotel or the airport.
All three parks are open year-round. The wildlife moves with the seasons.
